Covered Porches and Pergolas in Danville, KY
A west-facing deck in Kentucky is unusable from about two in the afternoon through July and August. Covered porches and pergolas fix that, and which one you want depends on whether you are solving for sun, for rain, or for both.
Pergola, covered porch, or pavilion
A pergola filters sun and does nothing for rain. A solid roof handles both but darkens the room behind it. A pavilion is a freestanding roof, useful when you want shade away from the house over a patio or hot tub.

Watch what it does to the room inside
A solid roof over a deck outside a kitchen or living room will take real daylight out of that room. It is the most common regret we hear about covered porches, and it is entirely preventable at the design stage.
Options include a lighter-colored ceiling, skylights or polycarbonate panels in the roof, or setting the cover back from the house wall so light still reaches the windows.
Attached covers are a flashing job
Anywhere a new roof meets an existing wall or roof is a potential leak, and it is the detail that separates a cover that lasts from one that rots the wall behind it within a few seasons.
Proper step flashing, counterflashing, and integration with the existing water management is not optional and it is not visible once done — which is exactly why it gets skipped on the cheapest bids.
Footings still apply
A pergola catches wind like a sail and a pavilion roof catches both wind and snow load. Both need real footings, sized and set below the local frost line as required by the Kentucky building code and confirmed with Boyle County.
Common questions
Will a pergola keep rain off?
No. An open pergola filters sun only. If you want to sit outside in the rain, you want a solid roof or a louvered system that closes.
Will a cover make my house darker inside?
It can, noticeably, on the room behind it. Design choices can offset it — lighter ceilings, setbacks, translucent panels — but it should be a decision, not a surprise.
Can a cover be added to my existing deck?
Sometimes. It adds load, so the frame and footings have to be assessed first, same as with a screened porch.
Do pergolas need permits?
It varies by size, attachment, and jurisdiction. We confirm with Boyle County rather than assuming.
