Pool decks have requirements ordinary decks do not: constant water, bare feet on hot surfaces, chemical exposure, and barrier rules that exist to keep children out of the water. Danville Deck Builders builds above-ground pool surrounds and deck edges for in-ground pools across Boyle County.
Surface temperature is the decision people forget
Dark composite in full Kentucky sun gets hot enough to be genuinely unpleasant on bare feet, and pool decks are walked barefoot by definition. Lighter colors, capped composites designed for lower heat gain, or wood all handle this better than a dark board.
This is worth testing rather than assuming. Ask to feel a sample that has been sitting in the sun.
Barriers and gates are not optional
Pool enclosure requirements — barrier height, gaps, self-closing and self-latching gates, and how a deck edge counts as part of the barrier — are set by code and enforced locally. They exist because of drownings, and they are the part of a pool deck we will not shortcut.
Requirements come through the Kentucky Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction and are confirmed with Boyle County before we build.
Water and chemicals shorten everything’s life

- Stainless or heavily coated hardware is worth the upgrade around a pool
- Generous drainage gaps between boards so water leaves fast
- Framing detailed so nothing traps standing water underneath
- Slip resistance considered on the actual walking surface
Above-ground surrounds
A full or partial surround turns an above-ground pool from a thing in the yard into a usable space. The structural point people miss is that the deck must be self-supporting — it should never rely on the pool wall for structure, because the pool wall is not a foundation.
Common questions
Can the deck be attached to my above-ground pool?
It can be built around and up to it, but the deck must carry its own load on its own posts and footings. The pool wall is not structural.
Which decking stays coolest?
Lighter colors, in every material. Dark composite gets hottest. If bare feet are the priority, choose color first and material second.
Do I need a fence if I have a deck around the pool?
A deck can form part of a compliant barrier, but only if it is built to meet the barrier rules including gates. That has to be designed in, not assumed.
Will pool chemicals ruin a wood deck?
They shorten its life and fade finishes faster than normal weathering. Good drainage and corrosion-resistant hardware make more difference than the board choice.
